Charles William Hunt was born on 31 January 1822. He was the son of Richard Hunt and Lydia Barber. He was christened on 7 April 1822 at St Johns, Parramatta, NSW, . He was a saddler. He married Julia Jeffcoat, daughter of Samuel Jeffcoat and Susan Lee, on 5 April 1841. He died on 19 September 1896 at age 74. He was buried at Harrisville Cemetery, Qld., . He and Julia lived after they were married at Merton's Cottage, a wooden building on O'Meara's Grant of 50 acres in Colah (Galston) Road, Dural, NSW. Charles farmed here and most of his children were born here. He was an active Methodist and was once called to minister at a Presbyterian church in Sydney but declined. After 1852 he must have worked some time as a Saddler like his father, but by 1860 he is found back at Dural. His death certificate says he spent some time in Victoria. He finally settled in Queensland at Redbank Plains in 1861, then at Milora near Harrisville where he farmed. He was Chairman of the first meeting of the Goolman Board (like a Shire Council) on 21 Feb 1880.1

Daisy Elizabeth Hunt married Reginald Gordon May. She was born in 1883. She was the daughter of George Henry Hunt and Elizabeth (Bessie) Davies. She was buried at Rookwood Cemetery, NSW, . She Gifted Painter and pianist, like her mother. Lived in Bathurst, later moved to Wollongong to be near her family. She Daisy first lived at Ryde Public School with her headmaster father and Art and Sewing mistress mother, a working mother while raising 11 children. The family later moved to Burwood where their home
'Glenophir' still stands in Livingstone St. I think my mother must have been a bit of a tomboy as she used to tell us taht her younger sister was referred to as 'sweet little innocent Violet' whereas Daisy got into her fair share of trouble. In
1914 Daisy married Reg May who had graduated dux of Hawkesbury Agricultural College. At first they managed George Hunt's property at Dural where Brian and Jean Hunt later lived. Here they lived a rather lean existence as predicted by Daisy's
mother when she said, 'But Daisy, half of nothing is nothing.' In fact, they were in some danger of starving to death had it not been for the kind neighbours, one of whom presented them with a goat for milk and some of whom gave food, such as
the gentleman who drawled, 'We were just going to give these grapes to the pigs when we thought YOU might like them.' In 1918, after rejoining the Dept of Agriculture, my father became manager of the Bathurst Experiment Farm, a position he held
until he retired in 1945. As the name implies, the Experiment Farm established in 1895, was a centre of agricultural research, to which it made a valuable contribution over the years. For example, it was my father who suggested to Gordon
Edgell, an orchardist, that he try planting rows of asparagus between his fruit trees. This led to the setting up of the Edgell's cannery at Bathurst. Nowadays Edgells are even expanding into Asian markets. Later my father suggested to Edgells
that they grow peas in Tasmania where they would get more crops per years. They now supply McDonalds with Tasmanian grown potatoes. Once a year the farm had an open day called 'Farmer's Day' to which farmers and orchardists flocked from a wide
surrounding area to learn the latest developments in agriculture. At all times the farm and its staff were available to help both with advice and in a practical way. Many times my father was called out in the middle of the night to save a sick
cow orhelp with some emergency. The officers, all trained specialists from the Dept of Ag, not only carried out research but also trained the students, younf men who came both from within Australia and from overseas, in Australian agricultural
methods. After the First World War there were many returned soldiers among these students and about the time of the Second World War, many European refugees. Famous students included a Russian Prince who was a member of the Czar's family and a
Persian prince, 37th in a direct line of descent from the Prophet Mahomet (sic), who went under the name of Mr Mostyn. It is strange to think that our billycan of milk used to be delivered by princes, English earls and ex-army generals.1
