He was killed by a load from a cart that unexpectedly tilted, as reported in the Sydney Gazette of 2 May 1812. There is doubt about the actual date of David's death as his details were later added to his parents' tombstone with the wrong date of death of 7 Nov 1811. Probably he died at the end of April 1812 as he was buried on 2 May.¹

Thomas Barber was born in 1763 at Manchester, Lancashire, England, .¹ He married Lydia Childs, daughter of David Childs and Mary Wellman, on 9 January 1802 at St John's Church Of England, Parramatta, NSW, Australia.² He was a member of the NSW Corps.² He died on 22 June 1838. He was buried on 24 June 1838 at St John's Church Of England, Parramatta, NSW, Australia.² He arrived on the ship 'Earl Cornwallis' on 12 Jun 1801 as a member of the NSW Corps. Born in Manchester, County Lancashire, England. he was Velvet Dresser by trade. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal, and later Sergeant. Had a fair complexion, grey eyes, light brown hair, and a 'small visage.' Thomas Barber joined the NSW Corp on 7 June 1800 at Chatham, Kent, transferring from 11 Regt. (WO25/642) He arrived in June 1801 as a member of the detachment of the NSW Corps. Also on that ship was convict Lydia Parker, a widow. Thomas left the corps in 1810 (when it disbanded) and received a grant of 100 acres and by the 1828 census
his holdings had increased to 2020 acres. He owned a shop in Parramatta, probably a butchery. He had a wine and spirits licence for a time until it was cancelled in 1819 for running a disorderly house. He was given 14 days to sell off his stock and wind up the business! The 1828 census shows him owning a business in Parramatta and a property in Yass. His principal property and place of residence was at Argyle just north of Goulburn.^3,1
