Since their records cannot be located on the assisted migrants index held by the NSW State records, it is probable they paid their own way.¹ He died on 29 July 1891 at Burwood, NSW, Australia.¹ He was buried at Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney, NSW, Australia.¹

He enlisted in the army on 3 Jan 1916 aged 24 years and 9 months. He had been a member of the Rifle Club Reserve. He was assigned to V Coy 36 Battalion. He left Australia on the ship "Beltana" for overseas service on 22 Nov 1916. James was promoted to Lance Corporal on 22 Sep 1917 and after a short leave in London he returned to the front and was killed.
