James Roughley was born on 11 October 1829 at Castle Hill, . He was the son of James Roughley and Harriet Kentwell. He married Lydia Hunt, daughter of Richard Hunt and Lydia Barber, on 7 February 1849 at Wesleyan Chapel, Dural, NSW, . He married Emily Tuckwell on 13 April 1882. He died on 2 April 1908 at Parramatta, NSW, Australia, at age 78.¹ He They were the first couple to be married in the Wesleyan Chapel at Dural which had been built on the property of George Thomas Hunt, Lydia's brother. In 1856 they built a new house called 'The Pines' which is still occupied by a great-grandson.

James Roughley was born in 1789 at Leigh, England, .¹ He was christened on 3 April 1789 at Leigh, Lancashire, UK, . He was Weaver/Farmer.¹ He was the son of Joseph Roughley and Elizabeth (Betty) Hunter. He married Harriet Kentwell, daughter of William (I) Kentwell and Elizabeth Morris, on 5 September 1825; St John's Anglican Church, Parramatta.¹ He died on 20 July 1838 at age 49.¹ He was buried on 20 July 1838 at Parramatta NSW, . He On 10 April 1817, James, his father, Joseph, and a Samuel Tyldesley were found with stolen goods. Ten yards of linen check, six pairs of stockings, four yards of linen cloth, two sacks and a yard of flannel. Total value=5 pennies. They worked
at a weaving mill. Tried in the court at Lancaster Castle, they were sentenced to transportation for 7 years. Arrived in Sydney on 14 Oct 1818 on the ship 'Tottenham.' By 1825, James is a landowner at Castle Hill and Joseph a cooper. Moved to
Dural in 1830 to a property of 50 acres on the corner of Old Northern Road and Galston Road.²
