Charles Joseph Byrnes was born on 12 March 1835.¹ He was the son of James Byrnes MLA and Ruth Barber. He married Anna Maria Phillips in 1866. He took over the cloth factory begun by his father and uncle and, like his father, became prominent in Parramatta public affairs. He was elected Mayor of Parramatta in 1870 and served in that office for several terms 1875-82, 1886-89 and 1892-96.¹ He died in 1917.

James Byrnes MLA was born in 1804 at Edgeworthstown, County Longford, Ireland.¹ He was the son of James Byrnes and Frances Moorehouse.¹ He married Ruth Barber, daughter of Thomas Barber and Lydia Childs, on 4 April 1826 at Parramatta, NSW, Australia.^2,1 He was a carpenter and builder and built many of Parramatta's buildings. The census two years after their marriage shows he leased thirty acres of land, seven acres of which were cleared. He had five acres cultivated, and he owned four horses and forty cattle. He and his younger brother had diverse business interests - as well as being general merchants, three of their ventures were a steam ferry service to Sydney, a steam flour mill, and a cloth factory. They were the first to produce clan tartan fabrics in Australia. James was elected 2nd mayor of Parramatta and was an MLA from 1858-1861 and 1864-1872.¹ He married Ann Harris in 1852.¹ He was Wesleyan.¹ He was buried at Rookwood, NSW, Australia.¹ He died in 1886 at Parramatta, NSW, Australia.¹
