When I took up responsibility as CEO of World Vision Australia at the end of 1988, I began writing a newsletter to staff. We were about 250 at that time and it was impossible for me to speak to everyone every week even though we had a weekly staff meeting that was part information and part inspiration. We called it "Big Devos". This newsletter was mostly published fortnightly, but not on a strict schedule. Although I used WordPerfect to write it, we printed it to hard copy and placed it on everyone's desk (it was 1988 after all). The 1989 editions have been lost.

1988 The First Issue Why Trellis? TRELLIS? What's that? A trellis is a grating of light wooden bars used as a support for fruit trees or creepers. The best way to find out something at World Vision is to ask someone. Some of the most important and useful information you'll get at World Vision will be via the Grapevine. But even the best grapevine needs a bit of support. This newsletter - "TRELLIS" - is meant to make our informal information exchanges more effective and accurate.

OUR GIFT Just before Christmas things were looking pretty bad in the Philippines. You might recall that there were troops in the streets of Makati where the World Vision office is. A few of us contributed to a small collection and sent A$444 to Nora Avarientos, our field director. She and her team decided to give the money to two families who were victims of bomb explosions during the coup.

IT IS STILL ONE AT A TIME Once upon a time there was mass marketing. The idea was that one product could be produced for everyone. So we have Coke and Big Macs. Then there was niche marketing. The idea is to find small groups of customers who have similar needs or wants. Make a product for the group. So we have boutiques.
